Today’s Muay Thai, also known as Thai-Boxing is a derivative of Muay Boran and Krabi Krabbong, the original battlefield systems of Thailand. Prem1er Combat Academy brings the same type of training that fighters undergo in Thailand to your neighborhood right here in Baltimore, catering to residents of Arbutus, Catonsville, Elkridge, Halethorpe and the surrounding areas. Muay Thai is known as “the art of eight limbs” because the eight points of contact used for striking are: the fists, the elbows, the knees and the shins. The Muay Thai we teach is based on the standardized curriculum implemented by the World Thai Boxing Association but expands on it further, introducing students to different styles of Thai Boxing, Western Boxing, Dutch-style kickboxing and elements from Karate, Kung Fu and the other striking arts after a strong foundation in traditional Thai Boxing has been laid. In addition to being undeniably effective fighters, thai-boxers are considered some of the best conditioned athletes in all of sports. In our training, we aim to develop a diverse repertoire of striking tools and increase our understanding of distance, timing, angles and rhythm. A typical class starts off with a physical warm-up such as skipping rope, shadow boxing or various types of calisthenics and then progresses into the featured topic of the day, depending on what chapter of our syllabus we’re on. Typical training methods include practicing counts and combinations on focus mitts, thai-pads and heavy bags as well as flow drills, partner exercises, light sparring and high intensity interval training.
